The General Reading List Bookstore

Note: Because these are modern editions, they may differ from the editions listed in Crowley's list.  Effort has been made to refer to scholarly and library quality editions.  If you find any errors, or better suggestions regarding specific editions, we'd appreciate your comments.  I've expanded the list somewhat to include some closely related texts, so they should be considered as recommendations which may be useful to the student rather than definitive.

"The object of this course of reading is to familiarize the student with all that has been said by the Great Masters in every time and country. He should make a critical examination of them; not so much with the idea of discovering where truth lies, for he cannot do this except by virtue of his own spiritual experience, but rather to discover the essential harmony in those varied works. He should be on his guard against partisanship with a favourite author. He should familiarize himself thoroughly with the method of mental equilibrium, endeavouring to contradict any statement soever, although it may be apparently axiomatic.

The general object of this course, besides that already stated, is to assure sound education in occult matters, so that when spiritual illumination comes it may find a well-built temple. Where the mind is strongly biased towards any special theory, the result of an illumination is often to inflame that portion of the mind which is thus overdeveloped, with the result that the aspirant, instead of becoming an Adept, becomes a bigot and fanatic." -- Aleister Crowley.

"The Classical Basis of Vedantism, the best-known form of Hindu Mysticism." -- Crowley.

The Upanishads - Volumes I through IV are published by The Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center of New York which bases it teachings on the principles of Vedanta, or Hinduism. Hinduism teaches that every soul is potentially divine, and that its divinity may be manifested through worship, contemplation, unselfish work, and philosophical discrimination. According to Hinduism, Truth is universal and all humankind and all existence are one. It preaches the unity of the Godhead, or ultimate Reality, and accepts every faith as a valid means for its own followers to realize the Truth.

The Illustrated Bhagavad Gita : A New Translation with Commentary
The Illustrated Bhagavad Gita : A New Translation with Commentary

The Bhagavad Gita is the single greatest theological and philosophical text to come out of ancient India. It addresses life's most difficult dilemmas, such as how to deal with adversity and how to find peace of mind while living in a tumultuous world. This brand new translation into English is unique in that it complements the text's ancient wisdom with inspirational illustrations. Translator Ranchor Prime has transformed an often obscure original text into language that retains the Bhagavad Gita's poetry, yet is clear and easy to understand for today's readers. His commentaries explain concepts of Hindu philosophy, for instance, karma and reincarnation, which are fundamental to the reader's overall understanding. The Bhagavad Gita is arranged as a conversation consisting of questions and answers between God—or Krishna—and the human soul, represented by Arjuna. This translation presents all 700 verses of the original text, divided into 18 chapters, and taking the form of 140 daily meditations. The book also includes a glossary of Hindu terms and an index. Approximately 120 beautiful color illustrations capture the spirit of this holy text.

This critical edition presents to the English reader for the first time the Dhammapada as it has been known throughout the centuries. With this volume, Carter and Palihawadana make a major contribution to the understanding of the Dhammapada, not only by presenting a new and accurate translation of the verses, but also by enabling readers to see the wake of this remarkable text through centuries of Buddhist tradition. In addition to the original Pali, the editors provide a translation of the commentary on the verses and the subsequent brief explanations of verse and commentarial passages provided by Sinhala sources.

Varieties of Religious Experience

"Valuable as showing the uniformity of mystical attainment." -- Crowley

Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature
Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature
Paving the way for all modern spiritual thought, The Varieties of Religious Experience was revolutionary in its view of religious life as centered not within the Church, but solely within the person. James, a vivid, subtle stylist writing for the skeptical, non-specialist reader, was the first to define spirituality as "the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men in their solitude." In this edition, scholars Taylor and Carrette bring a new understanding to James's life and his determination, in the cold, scientific face of the Industrial Revolution, to reaffirm the power of individual belief.

One hundred years after its publication James's work remains even more vital than before. Beyond its influence on the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, beyond its influence on launching the American pastoral counseling movement, and beyond its role in spawning the psychology of religion, it remains a book that empowers individuals and inspires readers with erudition, insight, and kindness. No discussion of current religion - from the fundamentalist revival to the New Age movement - is complete without an appreciation of this groundbreaking work.

The Pistis Sophia

"An admirable introduction to the study of Gnosticism." -- Crowley.

The Fall of Sophia: A Gnostic Text on the Redemption of Universal Consciousness
The Fall of Sophia: A Gnostic Text on the Redemption of Universal Consciousness

One of the most sublime Gnostic texts is the Pistis Sophia or "Faith Wisdom," a great allegory in which the resurrected Christ explains how he freed the divine Sophia from her imprisonment by the forces of spiritual wickedness. Christ goes on to show his disciples how they will share in this cosmic act of redemption.

In this profound yet accessible work, Egyptologist Violet MacDermot gives us a fresh translation of the Pistis Sophia from the Coptic and discusses it in its historical setting. She also shows us how Sophia's story of is our story. It is a tale of our separation and isolation as a result of ego-consciousness, but it is one in which we, too, can share spiritual liberation. Her engaging discussion relates this work not only to ancient teachings but to the thought of C.G. Jung, Emanuel Swedenborg, and the Kabalah.

Stephan A. Hoeller, one of today's foremost advocates of a renewed Gnostic tradition, gives this work further richness and scope in his foreword.

The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion
The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion

A classic study of the beliefs and institutions of mankind, and the progress through magic and religion to scientific thought, The Golden Bough has a unique status in modern anthropology and literature. First published in 1890, The Golden Bough was eventually issued in a twelve-volume edition (1906-15) which was abridged in 1922 by the author and his wife. That abridgement has never been reconsidered for a modern audience. In it some of the more controversial passages were dropped, including Frazer's daring speculations on the Crucifixion of Christ. For the first time this one-volume edition restores Frazer's bolder theories and sets them within the framework of a valuable introduction and notes.

The Age of Reason, by Thomas Paine.

"Excellent, though elementary, as a corrective to superstition." -- Crowley.

Age of Reason
The Age of Reason
represents the results of years of study and reflection by Thomas Paine on the place of religion in society.

Paine wrote: "Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst; every other species of tyranny is limited to the world we live in; but this attempts to stride beyond the grave, and seeks to pursue us into eternity."

The cool rationale of Paine's The Age of Reason influenced religious thinking throughout the world; and its pervasive influence continues to the present day.
